Casey’s Cakes and Classes – Local Restaurant History
Casey King found out exactly what she wanted to do when she’d visit Bessie’s Home Cooking each day before she would work her job at JayC.
King knew her love of baking and teaching people to bake would lead her to start her own business.
“We (King and Bessie) got to talking and Bessie told me that one day I would have a bakery in that same building,” she recalled.
King took a baking job with Christopher’s Catering before she decided she wanted to open a shop to bake and teach people how to bake and decorate.
“I especially enjoy teaching kids,” she said.
So on April 11, 2016, Casey’s Cakes and Classes opened in Brownstown, right by the Jackson County Courthouse.
King also started offering soup and sandwich lunch specials to expand her business. As it grew, so did her offerings.
Don’t let the name fool you, Casey’s Cakes and Classes offers breakfast and lunch daily, and caters weddings and events.
“My favorite part will always be teaching kids after school and having decorating birthday parties on the weekends,” she said.
Since opening, the restaurant and bakery has become known for iced sugar cookies for desserts and their made-from-scratch biscuits and gravy, which is served all day.
“You can’t beat from-scratch biscuits and real sausage gravy,” she said.
King said customers also have enjoyed the Roast Beef Manhattans on Thursdays and their variety of soups.
Owning a restaurant has allowed King to meet all kinds of friends, she said. Her friends are lucky, too, because they oftentimes become guinea pigs when she tries new recipes.
Using fresh ingredients also makes the place special, she said.
“That way you get the best quality for your customers,” she said. “I love cooking and baking food that I would be happy to eat, and sharing it with others.”
