Freeman Field was activated on Dec. 1, 1942, and was used to train US Army Air Corps pilots to fly twin engine planes, in preparation for learning to fly the really big bombers they would fly in combat. The Freeman Field Army Airfield Museum is located on the grounds of Freeman Field, in buildings once housing flight simulators,
The museum features firearms, operational flight simulators (try flying!), uniforms, airplane models, photos and maps of the area, and the original airfield fire truck. There is an array of plane parts that were buried on the base, including the tail section from a German fighter plane, which still has the Nazi emblem. There is a nice gift shop.
Freeman Field Army Airfield Museum is located at 1035 “A” Avenue, at the airport, in Seymour. It is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays, and other times by appointment.
